For each letter of the alphabet, there is particular sign. The use of fingerspelling has been integrated into the language of Auslan and is used especially for:
NOUNS

- To prevent somebody such as a child from understanding what is being said
The way that words are spelt are also modified when integrating fingerspelling into Auslan in order to gain and maintain a smooth flow of conversation. This is achieved by:
-grouping syllables with each other
-omitting 'unimportant' letters
-'introducing' the word at the first instance of using it by spelling each letter but then when referring back within the same conversation using only the first letter of the word.
