There are 5 different categories of signs within Auslan:
DEPICTING SIGNS Depicting signs are utilised to illustrate entities, specifically their shape and movement. This can is achieved by showing: -Dimensions -How something is handled -Use of SASS handshapes A meaning can be established from the above by the integration of both lexical and finger spelling signs
LEXICAL SIGNS Lexical signs are signs that have a specific linguistic meaning and are used in the same way by all Auslan speakers **www.auslan.org.au contains a inventory of all english words with an Auslan translatio along with an instructional video of how to perform the sign** ENACTMENT Enactment involves: -bodily movement -posture -eye gaze

CONJUNCTIONS Linking words between both words and phrases. Are most often finger spelt. INTERJECTIONS -Depict strong feelings -Often used alone INDICITIVE VERBS verbs that are altered in accordance to context to appropriately convey the semantic role. |
ADJECTIVES

Can be placed both before and after the noun DETERMINERS State the:
PREPOSITION Indicates
-Before a noun (most common) -Alone (when utilised as a verb) PRONOUNS -Made up of various pointing signs that indicate I, me, she, his etc. -Occur both before and after a verb ELLIPSIS Once the context of the conversation or sentence has been established, certain parts of the sentence can be omitted. NEGATION Negation is most commonly shown using non-manual features e.g shaking of the until the completion of the sentence -The manual signs 'not' and 'nothing are also used.
